The Database of NCOS1959_Mollusca includes 16008 records of Mollusca specimen collected in the Marine Biological Museum of Chinese Academy of Sciences during the National Comprehensive Oceanographic Survey (NCOS) from 1958 to1960. The surveyed area covered the coast of China Seas, including the Bohai Sea, the Yellow Sea, the East China Sea and the South China Sea, almost 1200 sampling stations. A research program has been initiated by the Minerals Management Service to gain better knowledge of the benthic communities of the deep Gulf of Mexico entitled "The Deepwater Program: Northern Gulf of Mexico Continental Slope Habitat and Benthic Ecology". Increasing exploration and exploitation of fossil hydrocarbon resources in the deep-sea prompted the Minerals Management Service of the U.S. Department of the Interior to support an investigation of the structure and function of the assemblages of organisms that live in association with the sea floor in the deep-sea. The program, "Deep Gulf of Mexico Benthos" or DGoMB, is studying the northern Gulf of Mexico (GOM) continental slope from water depths of 300 meters on the upper continental slope out to greater than 3,000 meters water depth seaward of the base of the Sigsbee and Florida Escarpments. NEAMAP stands for NorthEast Area Monitoring and Assessment Program. NEAMAP was developed to meet the needs of fisheries management and stock assessment activities in the northeastern United States. NEAMAP began in 2006 with a fall pilot survey and in 2008 began conducting both a spring and fall survey. NEAMAP samples from Cape Cod, MA south to Cape Hatteras, NC and targets both juvenile and adult fishes. NEAMAP is an integrated, cooperative state/federal data collection program. Its mission is to facilitate the collection and dissemination of fishery-independent information obtained in the Northeast for use by state and federal fisheries management agencies, the fishing industry (commercial and recreational), researchers, and others requesting such information. The intent of NEAMAP is not to change existing programs, but to coordinate and standardize procedures and improve data quality and accessibility.

Long-term Otter Trawl Survey is performed at various estuarine and inner continental shelf sites during July and September each year. Trawl used has a length of 4.9 m and 6 mm bar mesh at the cod end. Tows (n=3) are 2 minutes long. For each tow 20 individuals of each species are measured (fish - TL or FL, crabs - BW, sex is also noted) and the remainder are counted. Shrimp, hermit crabs and mud crabs are not counted.

This dataset represents a pre-filtered subset of the Bishop Museum Natural History Specimen Data, as made available through the Bishop Museum (BPBM) DiGIR provider. The filter criteria for this dataset restricts the complete dataset to only organisms taken from marine environments, and only records that have geo-reference coordinates assigned to them. The data consist primarily of vouchered specimens in the Ichthyology, Marine Invertebrate, and Algae collections of BPBM. Other marine records that are not yet included in the pre-filter, but will be added, include marine mammals, reptiles and birds. Also missing are marine malacological specimens, which will be added at a later time.

ECOHAB-GOM is a project that addresses several fundamental issues regarding Alexandrium blooms in the Gulf of Maine: 1) the source of the Alexandrium cells that appear in the fresh water plumes in the western Maine coastal current (WMCC); 2) Alexandrium cell distribution and dynamics in the eastern Maine coastal current (EMCC); and 3) linkages among blooms in the WMCC, the EMCC and on Georges Bank. Utilizing a combination of numerical modeling, hydrographic, chemical, and biological measurements, moored and drifting current measurements, and satellite imagery, we are working to characterize the structure, variability and autecology of the major Alexandrium habitats in the Gulf of Maine.

In 1989, Fisheries and Oceans Canada initiated an investigation of a demoic acid incident which included a survey of Atlantic coastal waters to determine what potentially toxic species of phytoplankton were commonly present. In Nova Scotia this survey was conducted at five coastal sites over a period of three years. Approximately 26 times each year water samples were collected from 3 depths at each of the sites in Whitehaven Harbour, Ship Harbour, St. Margaret's Bay, Woods Harbour and Annapolis Basin. Phytoplankton in these samples were identified and counted. This dataset also includes information from two additional sites, Ship Harbour and Annapolis Basin. In March 1992, DFO made a commitment to establish two long-term monitoring sites in Nova Scotia. Sampling at these sites, one at the mouth of Sambro Harbour and the other at Indian Point in Mahone Bay, began in July 1992 and continued till December of 1994.

The Center for Coastal Monitoring and Assessments Biogeography Team (BT) has been conducting research and monitoring in the US Virgin Islands since 2001. The basis for this work is the nearshore benthic habitats maps (less than 100 ft depth) created by NOAAs Biogeography Program in 2001 and NOS bathymetry models. Using ArcView GIS software, the digitized habitat maps are stratified. Smapling sites are randomly selected within these strata to ensure coverage of the entire study region and not just a particular reef or seagrass area. At each site, fish, macro-invertebrates, and benthic composition information is then quantified following standardized protocols. By relating the data collected in the field back to the habitat maps and bathymetric models, BT is able to model and map species level and community level information. This dataset contains the fish assessment and monitoring data from St. Croix, US Virgin Islands.

Resource competition between fisheries and marine mammal continue to raise concern worldwide. Understanding this complex conflict requires data on spatial and dietary overlap of marine mammal and fisheries. In Uruguay, the South American sea lions population has been dramatically declining over the past decade. The reasons for this population decline are unknown but may include the following: (1) direct harvesting; (2) reduced prey availability and distribution as a consequence of environmental change; or (3) biological interaction with fisheries. This study aims to determine resource overlap and competition between South American sea lions (SASL, Otaria flavescens, n=10) and the artisanal fisheries (AF), and the coastal bottom trawl fisheries (CBTF).

Abundance and biomass of fish species collected during the day from 1983 to 1986 off the coast of the southeastern United States (Cape Fear, NC to Cape Canaveral, FL). Kali poles are "off-bottom" longlines, designed to place a large number of baited hooks in close proximity to rugged rocky bottom, while minimizing hangups of the gear in the rocks. The poles are attached to a 91-m (100-yard) treated cotton groundline [6.4 mm (1/4 inch)]. Each pole is 3 m (10 feet) long PVC plastic pipe [25-mm (1-inch diameter), schedule 80] and has 6. Each 91-m (100-yard) polypropylene groundline has 20 poles.

This work presents a characterization of the phyto- and zoobenthos from the continental shelf and slope of the central Brazilian coast, between Salvador, in Bahia (13°00 S- 38°31 W) to São Tomé Cape, in Rio de Janeiro State (22°12 S - 41°15 W). Samples were taken in 222 stations, during 4 oceanographic cruises (1996-2002). Sampling was made basically using rectangular dredges, Van Veen grab and a box-corer.

Observations were taken within the 200 nmi Hawaiian Exclusive Economic Zone. The list was taken from "A Checklist of the Fishes of the Hawaiian Archipelago" by B. Mundy, in press, B. P. Abundance and biomass of fish species collected during the day from 1988 to 2000 off the coast of the southeastern United States (Cape Fear, NC to Cape Canaveral, FL). Chevron traps were set on live-bottom reef areas on the continental shelf and upper slope. Chevron traps were arrowhead shaped (maximum dimensions of 1.5 m x 1.7 m x 0.6 m.; 0.91 m3 volume) and constructed of 35 mm x 35 mm square mesh plastic-coated wire. Chevron traps had one entrance funnel (“horseneck”), and one release panel to remove the catch. Each trap was soaked between 90 and 120 minutes.

The AZMP was implemented in 1998 with the aim of collecting and analyzing the biological, chemical, and physical data to detect and monitor seasonal and interannual variability in eastern Canadian waters. The key element of the AZMP sampling strategy is the oceanographic sampling at fixed stations (every two weeks, conditions permitting) and along sections (1- 3 times per year). Field sampling and laboratory analyses are carried out following well-established common protocols.

Plankton tows were carried out during two multidisciplinary oceanographic missions to the Sable Gully (Scotian Shelf, Canada) in 2006 and 2007. The first of these was onboard the CCGS Hudson (18HU06008) and took place between April 17, 2006 and May 7, 2006. The second was also on the CCGS Hudson (18HU07033) and took place between August 2, 2007 and August 9, 2007. Zooplankton were collected at a series of stations in the Gully by vertical tows using a 3/4m diameter ring net (202 micron mesh). Most tows were between 100m and the surface, with a few deeper casts. The OBIS collection is a subset of this dataset containing species distribution information.

In its current form the project consists of a collaborative effort between Dubai’s Wildlife Protection Office (WPO) and the Jumeirah Group. It evolved from a small-time operation using fish quarantines, available locally for the occasional turtle stranding, but in 2010 alone, over 350 turtles have passed through the project and have been released into the sea. At the outset of the collaboration, the co-chairman of the Marine Turtle Specialist Group was brought in by WPO to ensure that the project followed best practice guidelines in terms of turtle handling, rehabilitation and release protocols.

When the Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center established the Coral Reef Ecosystems Division (CRED) in 2001, the Center initiated a program to extend habitat mapping in the U.S. Pacific Islands into deeper water that cannot be readily mapped using satellite and aerial techniques. Since that time NOAA Fisheries has led the effort to map these deeper reefs using ship-based acoustic mapping systems, coupled with video and still-camera observations. The Marine RAP survey team assessed 45 sites over an 18-day period (11-28 February 2000), including 19 expert specialists from Brazilian universities, NGOs and the Brazilian Government. At each site, an underwater inventory was made of six faunal groups selected to serve as indicators of overall biodiversity. The faunel groups included corals, fishes, algae, polychaete worms, molluscs, and crustaceans (the last three groups were analyzed only on bottom-sediment samples). In addition to the species inventory, bottom-sediment samples were taken in the immediate vicinity of the reefs. Observations and data on reef fisheries were also gathered by a fisheries scientist who evaluated the abundance and size of the main target species at each site. Additionally, the knowledge about species occurrences from other papers, were compiled by specialists producing a more complete list of species for the region.

This data set contains the records of demersal fish fauna inhabiting irregular bottoms and depressions on the outer shelf and slope of the South and Southeastern Brazilian coast between 220 15’S and 340 40’S collected during the REVIZEE program. This data set contains records of pelagic and demersal fish collected during the REVIZEE program off the southern Brazilian coast. Six oceanographic cruises were carried out from 1996 to 1999 between Cape of São Tomé (22oS) and Chuí (34oS). Pelagic fish distribution was investigated with acoustic methods (SIMRAD EK-500, double frequency ecosound, of 38 and 120 kHz) and fish was collected with a mid-water trawl at stations with high target strength, mainly within 100 and 500-m depth. Demersal fish were investigated to assess the fishing potential of catches vulnerable to hooks over both hard and soft bottoms on the outer shelf and upper slope – 80% of captures consisted of commercially valuable species.

The Center for Coastal Monitoring and Assessments Biogeography Team (BT) has been conducting research and monitoring in Puerto Rico since 2000. The basis for this work is the nearshore benthic habitats maps (less than 100 ft depth) created by NOAAs Biogeography Program in 2001 and NOS bathymetry models. Using ArcView GIS software, the digitized habitat maps are stratified. Smapling sites are randomly selected within these strata to ensure coverage of the entire study region and not just a particular reef or seagrass area. At each site, fish, macro-invertebrates, and benthic composition information is then quantified following standardized protocols. By relating the data collected in the field back to the habitat maps and bathymetric models, BT is able to model and map species level and community level information. This dataset contains the fish assessment and monitoring data from La Parguera, Puerto Rico.

A research program has been initiated by the Minerals Management Service to gain better knowledge of the benthic communities of the deep Gulf of Mexico entitled "The Deepwater Program: Northern Gulf of Mexico Continental Slope Habitat and Benthic Ecology". Increasing exploration and exploitation of fossil hydrocarbon resources in the deep-sea prompted the Minerals Management Service of the U.S. Department of the Interior to support an investigation of the structure and function of the assemblages of organisms that live in association with the sea floor in the deep-sea. The program, "Deep Gulf of Mexico Benthos" or DGoMB, is studying the northern Gulf of Mexico continental slope from water depths of 300 meters on the upper continental slope out to greater than 3,000 meters water depth seaward of the base of the Sigsbee and Florida Escarpments. FishBase is supported and supervised by a consortium of currently 8 international institutes and organizations (see www.fishbase.org/home.htm). Data encoding and programming is done mostly by a group of specialists in the Philippines. However, there are also over 1000 partners all over the world who contribute photos and data and check entries for accuracy. FishBase is available for free in monthly online updates and also on CD ROM and DVDs for a modest fee.

Benthic fauna data has been collected from 1881 to the present by the National Marine Fisheries Service Laboratories at Woods Hole, MA and Sandy Hook, NJ. The data includes the work by Wigley and Theroux on the macrofauna of the Northeastern United States. Other major studies include Ocean Pulse, the Northeast Monitoring Program, New York Bight, 12 Mile Dumpsite, Long Island Sound and Raritan Bay surveys. Parameters included in these surveys include depth, sediment type, gear type, number, weight, family, class, genus, species name, and abundance. A total of 21,000 sample sites are included in this data set with 4,000 meters being the maximum depth sampled.

It is widely recognized that wide areas of the Arctic are changing from arctic to subarctic conditions. Rapid warming is causing higher water temperatures and reduced ice cover, two factors that will certainly provoke severe ecosystem changes propagating through all trophic levels. At this stage, it is essential to establish benchmarks in biodiversity at key locations in the Canadian Arctic prior to (a) the expected changes in ice cover, ocean chemistry and climate and (b) the future human activities (transport, trawling or dredging, fossil fuel, etc.) that are likely to happen in response to the predicted environmental changes. Unlike Canada’s two other oceans, we have the opportunity to document pristine conditions before ocean changes and exploitation occurs. This could help sound management actions in the Arctic.

Twenty-nine plankton tows were collected at different water depths in the equatorial and northern Pacific Ocean during the Hudson 70 cruise. Thirty planktonic foraminiferal species, belonging to eleven genera and three families, have been identified. Florida Antillean traps were set on live-bottom reef areas on the continental shelf and upper slope. Florida Antillean traps were rectangular (0.9 m x 1.1 m x 0.6 m; 0.59 m3 volume) and constructed of 38 x 51 mm (1.5 x 2.0 inch) plastic-coated wire mesh. Each trap had one entrance and one bait well (0.13-m diameter, 0.6-m length). Each trap was soaked between 90 and 120 minutes.

This dataset includes information on sea stars collected during the ANDEEP3 expedition, which took place in 2005. The expedition focused on deep-sea stations in the Powell basin and Weddell sea. Sea stars were collected using an Agassiz trawl (3m, mesh-size 500µm), deployed in 16 stations during the ANTXXII/3 (ANDEEP3, PS72) expedition of the RV Polarstern. Sampling depth ranged from 1047 to 4931m. Trawling distance ranged from 731 to 3841m. The sampling area ranges from -41°S to -71°S (latitude) and from 0 to -65°W (longitude).

Plankton samples were taken either superficially or vertically from different depths to the surface off the coast of Brazil (4 degrees 57 minutes N and 34 degrees 42 minutes S). These plankton samples belong to the collections of the Instituto Oceanográfico, USP. Some were donated by foreign institutions like the Japanese Government (samples from the "Toko Maru" cruise) and The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution ("Atlantis" cruise n. 247 along 36°S lat.). Some were donated to the Instituto by the Brazilian Navy. The others were collected by the Institutos staff for several purposes (hydrographical, biological and fisheries research).

At Macquarie Island 1000 seals were weighed per annum between 1993-2003 at birth and individually marked with two plastic flipper tags in the inter-digital webbing of their hind flippers. These tagged seals were weighed again at weaning, when length, girth, fat depth, and flipper measurements were made. Three weeks after weaning 2000 seals were permanently and individually marked by hot-iron branding. Recaptures and re-weighing of these known aged individuals were used to calculate growth and age-specific survival of the seals. Similar data were collected from elephant seals between 1950 and 1965 when seals were individually marked by hot-iron branding. Mark-recapture data from these cohorts were used to assess the demography of the declining population. Length and mass data were also collected for these cohorts and were used, for the first time, to assess the growth of individual seals without killing them.

The Center for Coastal Monitoring and Assessments Biogeography Team (BT) has been conducting research and monitoring in Puerto Rico since 2000. The basis for this work is the nearshore benthic habitats maps (less than 100 ft depth) created by NOAAs Biogeography Program in 2001 and NOS bathymetry models. Using ArcView GIS software, the digitized habitat maps are stratified. Smapling sites are randomly selected within these strata to ensure coverage of the entire study region and not just a particular reef or seagrass area. At each site, fish, macro-invertebrates, and benthic composition information is then quantified following standardized protocols. By relating the data collected in the field back to the habitat maps and bathymetric models, BT is able to model and map species level and community level information. This dataset contains the benthic composition and monitoring data from La Parguera, Puerto Rico.

Abundance and biomass of fish species collected during the day from 1983 to 2000 off the coast of the southeastern United States (Cape Fear, NC to Cape Canaveral, FL). Bottom Longlines are constructed of 3.2-mm galvanized cable (1525 m long), deployed from a longline reel with 1220 m of cable used as groundline and the remaining 305 m buoyed to the surface. The groundline consists of a 10 kg weight attached to the terminal end, 100 gangions (comprising of an AK snap, approximately 0.5 m of 90 kg monofilament and a tuna circle hook at 12-m intervals) attached to the groundline, and another weight at the groundline’s buoy end. From 1982 through 1987 hook sizes were #5, #7 or #9; after 1996 the hook sizes were #5 or #7.

Data of snow petrel (Pagodroma nivea) of the Bunger Hills during the season 1999-2000. During the 1999/2000 summer a group of four people visited the Bunger Hills, an area of ice-free rock situated in Wilkes Land, eastern Antarctica, with the aim of gathering scientific and other information to support the development of an Environmental Impact Assessment for the use of sites in the area for landings by large aircraft capable of intercontinental flight. The following report, which describes the natural history of the Bunger Hills, was developed from observations made in the field during this visit supplemented by information published previously.

Large sessile habitat-forming organisms such as sponges, corals, bryozoans and hydroids play a crucial role in the structure of Antarctic marine communities and enhance the local biodiversity. Not only are there many species of these groups found in the Antarctic (387 sponges, 141 corals, 320 bryozoans and 337 hydroids) but they also form vital habitats for countless other organisms. The habitats formed by these megafaunal organisms are increasingly being recognized as both vulnerable and important ecosystems. The Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) adopted a proposal to declare two areas of the Southern Ocean as Vulnerable Marine Ecosystems (VMEs). Both areas proposed are highly biodiverse, particularly with respect to habitat-forming hydrocorals, sponges and associated fauna.

Survey for lobster larvae - Northumberland Straits. Lobster eggs are laid during the summer months but remain attached to the under surface of the female lobster's tail where they continue to develop for about 11 months. In Northumberland Strait hatching starts about June 1 and continues throughout July and August. When the tiny lobsters emerge from the egg they are about 1/3 of an inch in total length and are known as first-stage lobster larvae. These undergo three successive molts, passing through the second and third stages before reaching the fourth stage. The first three stages bear little resemblance to the adult lobsters but the fourth stages can be easily recognized as a lobster although only ½ an inch in total length. From the first to the fourth stage the larvae are free-swimming and are usually concentrated at the surface during day-light hours.

The Maine-New Hampshire Inshore Trawl Survey is conducted twice a year, for five weeks at a time, always starting in New Hampshire and ending off Grand Manan.
